Tony graduated from Lincoln College, Oxford with a degree in Ancient and Modern History and immediately put it to good use by joining Publicis as a graduate trainee. Whilst there, aside from his account handling duties, he helped to write an IPA Effectiveness Award paper on the Renault Clio and a Cannes-shortlisted commercial for Harp Lager.
After 6 years, during which time he worked on a variety of accounts including Renault and Guinness, he joined BMP DDB as the account director on Courage. Later, Tony spent time as the European Account Director on Sony and FIFA, before being promoted to the board in 1995.
Tony joined Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe as an Associate Director in 1998. Initially, his account portfolio included Virgin Direct, Miller and the Energy Saving Trust.
Tony was responsible for the launch of talkSPORT as it re-branded from Talk Radio. In 2003 he also led the team who ran the Carlsberg global sponsorship of Euro 2004.
Prior to the merger with Y&R, Tony chaired the Associate Board and is now the agency’s Deputy Chairman. His responsibilities now involve the running of many of the Agency’s key businesses, most notably Budweiser - where he has overseen their sponsorship of the Premier league and the 2006 World Cup, the COI, Xerox and Powergen (now Eon), for which he has helped to develop their sponsorship of the FA Cup .
Tony, who has just turned 40, regularly tutors for the IPA and NABS and will talk happily of his days on the northern karaoke competition circuit. His remaining ambitions are to see his beloved Newcastle United finally win in London and to be able to sing “It’s Only Make Believe” without his voice squeaking.
